Matthew Thomas Dattilo

Matthew Thomas Dattilo is a founding partner of Simpson Dattilo, LLC, a boutique law firm providing legal representation and trusted counsel to clients in corporate, administrative, real estate, and estate planning matters from offices in Chicago, Riverside, Illinois and Louisville, Kentucky.  Mr. Dattilo focuses his practice on outside general counsel services, corporate law, commercial real estate, public procurement, and administrative and governmental matters.  His clients include restaurants, commercial food service providers, regional grocery store chains, national convenience store operators, public contractors, airport concessionaires and technology firms.   Mr. Dattilo has also served as a hearing officer with the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.

Prior to founding Simpson Dattilo, LLC, Mr. Dattilo served as general counsel and corporate secretary for Premier Restaurant Group, a diversified provider of food and beverage services based in Chicago, Illinois.  There, Mr. Dattilo’s duties included oversight for legal matters throughout Premier’s portfolio of companies including operations in airport concessions, catering, vending and corporate foodservices.  As Premier’s first chief legal officer, Mr. Dattilo was charged with building a corporate legal function from scratch and maintained responsibility for all litigation, contract, intellectual property, corporate governance, risk management, and government relations matters.  Building on nearly a decade of experience as a general counsel, Mr. Dattilo now serves as outside general counsel for a range of companies.

Mr. Dattilo has overseen the public contracting process on behalf of clients in six states at city, county and state levels.   No stranger to the court room, in 2012, Mr. Dattilo argued a successful challenge to Cook County’s real estate taxation scheme of licensed property at Chicago’s airports resulting in significant changes to city-wide concession contracts and county taxing procedures at both Midway and O’Hare International Airport, the nation’s busiest airport.

During law school, Mr. Dattilo clerked for the Office of the Illinois Attorney General where he defended state agencies and prosecuted antitrust and deceptive business practice suits.  In 2007, he was named a Janet D. Steiger Fellow by the American Bar Association.  He also worked in the general counsel’s office of then publicly traded RehabCare Group, Inc. (NYSE: RHB).  Prior to law school, Mr. Dattilo clerked for the chief tax counsel of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways & Means, and served as an aide for policy and strategic planning to the mayor of Louisville, Kentucky.

Today, Mr. Dattilo sits on the Council of Regents of Loyola University and the Board of Regents of St. Ignatius College Preparatory School, both in Chicago.  Mr. Dattilo serves as a member of the Illinois Supreme Court’s Committee on Judicial Performance Evaluation and the Advisory Board of the Illinois Restaurant Association.  He also enjoys memberships in the Economic Club of Chicago and the Justinian Society of Lawyers.  Mr. Dattilo is past Chairman of the Board of the Loyola University Museum of Art and trustee of the Indiana Society of Chicago Foundation.

Mr. Dattilo is admitted to practice law before state and federal courts in Illinois and Kentucky.  In 2012, he was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court alongside his father, Thomas M. Dattilo, a 53-year veteran litigator.  Mr. Dattilo earned his juris doctor from the University of Tulsa and a bachelor of science in public finance from Indiana University Bloomington.   During law school, he also attended Loyola University Chicago as a visiting student, earning a special commendation from the university’s Council of Regents, the board on which he now sits.  Mr. Dattilo was named by the Chicago Lawyer Magazine and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin as one of Illinois’ top forty attorneys under forty years of age to watch in 2020, and a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers in 2022.
